A distinguishing and unique feature of most of the buildings that sprung up in KGF in the early 1900s was that granite stones of the finest quality was used to construct them. The most outstanding feature is their solidity, Some of these buildings that have stood the test of time and are still in fairly good condition even after a century are:
1. All the Main Offices in all the mines,
2. The Cauvery and the Kolar Mines Power Stations or the Electricity Departments in Oorgaum, pictured above.
3. The original building of the KGF Golf Club.
4. St Mary’s Church which was later renamed as Our Lady of Victories Church in Champion Reefs.
5. Part of the main building of the Mining Hospital in Champion Reefs
6. The St Micheal’s and All Angels Church in Oorgaum.
7. Part of The Oorgaum Dairy.
8. The Government Civil Hospital and the Government Maternity Hospital in Robertsonpet.
Memories of a glorious childhood spent in Kolar Gold Fields. KGF was known for its colonial ambience and came into existence as early as the 16th century.

Hello Bridget,
ReplyDeleteI was searching for recipe for cakes and O.T. I misplaced my 3 books + my mom's, when i chanced upon your blog on KGF. I'm born out there but my mom only came for the confinement and Christening. I was born at St Theresa, Robinsonpet and I guess it must be the Govt Hospital. Mom used to talk about the 3 main mines and I am familiar with the names including the dances by firelight during the Christmas season. My godparents were Mr Tony Dsilva and his mom. Incidentally I was born in 1953. Unfortunately, I've never come after that, I so dream and yearn to visit one day. It would be wonderful to. I'm in Golden Rock, Tiruchy and all the nostalgia of KGF runs relatively parrellel. We still go carol singing though with much odds against us. I am so proud to see an Anglo-Indian from down South so famous. Great going girl and Praise be God and His Holy Name. Love. Dimpy Egan-Vernum
Thanks Delilah
